Bill was my boss on Wall Street in the 1980's. He was a stand-up guy who would take a bullet for his staff. His was the kind of stuff which makes a great military commander, the kind of whom they say, "He was loved by his men." As if it happened yesterday, I can recall him saying, of the illness that eventually carried him off, "It doesn't bother me." Such was the measure of the man.
