Patrick Cullinan  > Brooklyn > Jahn's Ice Cream Establishment
July 23, 2007. Jahn's, on 117th Street off Myrtle Avenue in Richmond Hill, is 100 years old this year. I paid them my first visit in 1955. It seems hardly to have changed since then. Update -- Jahn's closed on the Saturday after Thanksgiving! The Jahn's in Jackson Heights, Queens, is the only one left now.

Patrick Cullinan > The ornate cornice is original. Although it doesn't show in the photo, the woodwork just above the dado (which means the paneling that goes from the floor up to a little above the tabletops) -- the woodwork is deeply and universally adorned with the accumulated carvings and scratches of generations of patrons. "George Bernard Shaw loves Ellen Terry," etc.
Patrick Cullinan > I noticed little gold-colored ornaments attached to the cornice...
Patrick Cullinan > These turned out to be molds or ramekins, maybe used in forming objects made of sherbet or the like. This one is a log.
Patrick Cullinan > And this one of course is a lemon.
Patrick Cullinan > And this one is an early arthropod of the Cambrian Period. No! It's a flower. ;)
Patrick Cullinan > An ancient dispenser of some fluid or other, certainly not absinthe.
Patrick Cullinan > Patron no doubt looking at TV on his cellphone.
Patrick Cullinan > This is an original soda fountain. The design of course is superior to our modern ideas about utilitarian objects.
Patrick Cullinan > This flash shot reveals better detail.
